i suppose if worse comes to worse…

I’m heading to the gas station soon to fill up, something that is aggravating me more and more these days. While I would really enjoy this scooter, or even this one, I’m not ready to sell my car to get the money. Yesterday I realized that since it’s starting to cool off a little bit, I should pull out my bicycle and do a little riding. Since my town is small it’s totally feasible, as long as it’s not too hot (pastors really shouldn’t show up for a visit when totally drenched in sweat).

Then I remembered seeing a kit out there one time to add a small gas engine to your bicycle, so I started searching around. For only $200, I could add an 80cc engine to my bike and cruise along at around 30-35mph while yielding about 120mpg! Then I found a kit that would allow me to actually shift gears, thereby enabling me to get upwards of 45mph while cruising at around 60% throttle!

I’m not seriously considering one of these at this point, and let’s just forget for a moment how, well, embarrassing it might be. It’s still pretty stinkin’ clever.

’cause that’s what tiggers do best

We just got our new TV a few nights ago, and while we don’t have the HD box yet it’s still an amazing picture compared to what we’re used to! One of the first things I watched was some type of “shocking real video” type show. It showed a video of a tigress who was highly ticked off because her cubs had been caught, and now rangers were trying to catch her as well. You can click here for the full length video, and I highly recommend it because it’s absolutely incredible how you can see the tiger walking around one second, and the next she completely disappears in the grass. Even though the picture quality on Youtube isn’t great, it wasn’t any easier to spot the tiger on the TV, she just disappeared! The people are on elephants and the big beasts start getting real antsy, and for good reason. All a sudden the tiger darts out of the grass, jumps about 12 feet through the air and takes a swipe at the dude on the elephant! Below is the slow-mo version of just the last part.

for my newest readers

I recently remembered that I had 4 drafts that had not been published to my blog.  When I switched from the old blogspot over to wordpress, these 4 posts didn’t make it for whatever reason, but somehow they ended up as unpublished drafts.  Since I have a few new readers, I thought I should throw this out there so that you knew what you missed out on in case you’ve read back into my archives. I’m sure all of you have, because what I write is so fascinating.  I’m glad I’m doing this too, because 2 of the drafts were old posts that I really enjoyed reading again.

August 1, 2005 - I write some thoughts about my recent mission trip to Nevada.  This brought back very good memories.  I was also using a different host for my comments back then, so that’s why it appears I had no readers for the first several years of my blogging life, as opposed to the throngs of people who read my stuff these days.

September 17, 2007 - This was last fall when I was doing all that insane driving.  It didn’t capture the entire post, but the gist of it was that I was looking at a truck for sale on the side of the road and missed my turn.  Since I was still new to that route I didn’t realize I was way off track for quite some time.

October 11, 2007 - This post wasn’t carried over in it’s entirety either, but I do remember that I had finally found and purchased a Honda Accord after searching for a few weeks.

December 28, 2007 - The jewel of the lost posts!  You must check this one out and share a laugh with me all over again!

A friend sent me these pictures from Hurricane Ike, and at this point I have no reason to believe they aren’t really from that particular storm.  Living in a coastal town, these images really got my attention, and also made me thankful I went ahead and got flood insurance.

My buddy Joel posted a video for a group that he’s trying out for (you really need to head over there and see this awesome group), but I really think this one is a better fit for him. And Charlie, you could play keys. I’ll handle your merchandising and promotions.  Well take this thing to the top!

camcorder update

Just before Hanna was born I was talking about camcorders, so here’s a little of what I learned and what I think I’m going to do.  Remember I wanted either a flash drive or hard disk drive camcorder, I wanted it to hook right up to my Mac and work with iMovie, and I wanted it to be highly portable.  The highly portable part for me meant I wanted something small and somewhat durable.  I went back and forth on what to do and found what I wanted for about $400 but I thought, what the heck, I’ll try to go cheap first.

For around $100 I picked up a Aiptek from Circuit City, since that was the closest store to the hospital.  I knew this would not be grand, but was surprised that the video quality was not too shabby for what it was.  2 things I did not expect though - it didn’t work with my Mac (without getting other programs to convert this to that) and it used AA batteries as opposed to having an internal rechargeable.  It was also very awkward to hold in my hand and actually use at the same time.  I returned it the next day.

I haven’t bought another one yet but I know what I’m getting whenever I do buy.  I went back to the line that I found that really appealed to me in the first place, and it was from Panasonic.   Several of those are nice and compact but 2 of them really stood out to me.  The cheapest one at $250 is the SDR-S10P1 and it is impact and water resistant.  Then slightly more expensive at $400 is the SDR-SW20S (also in red) and it’s impact resistant and waterproof to about 5 feet deep.  I know that’s not too deep, but it’s still a pretty cool feature.

I want the one that’s waterproof for several reasons.  One is that it’s also dust/sand proof, which would be great for us here at the beach.  When we were scalloping this summer, I was out there thinking how cool it would be to have a waterproof camera, and the 5′ depth limit wouldn’t be a problem out there.  We vacation at the lake each year, and my kids also enjoy playing in the rain.  Then last Sunday our neighbor had a birthday party with a big water slide.  That would have been so fun to have that thing in the pool at the bottom as my kids came flying down!

I discovered that all of those shown on that page record in mpeg 4, which is what will work with iMovie.  I read one review where the lady said she hooked it up and iMovie picked it up right away without having to load additional software, and that’s important to me.  I read as many reviews as I could find on them and got lots of mixed opinions.  Some said it was poor quality and were recommending very expensive HD cameras instead.  I learned a while ago that reviewers like that are generally professional reviewers who have access to lots of different products, so of course they lean towards the best of the best.  Other reviews were from regular people like me and they loved the video quality and performance, and I think I fall into that “regular people” category.  You can’t shoot in very low light, but I never do anyway so it’s not an issue for me.  There are a few clips on Youtube, but of course since the site compresses everything so much nothing looks great there.  I think it’ll probably be perfect for what I need.

up, up, and away!

When I titled my previous post, I was meaning to sound snobbish as if I were too good for a scooter.  The truth is, I’ve been considering one for a couple months now, ever since my buddy rode his over here to the house and let me ride it around.  Of course I’d rather have a motorcycle, but it’s hard to argue with the price and with 90-100 mpg.  I’d love to have a Ranger or Tacoma, so having a scooter would make that more feasible with gas being like it is.  And now, thanks to Hurricane Ike, gas is supposed to get to $5 per gallon around here today.  I know it should come down soon, but it’s pretty aggravating still.

ugh, I’m giving advice on scooters…

OK Charlie, if you’re really serious about this scooter phase, then at least check out the following.  I’ve got a buddy here in town who just got a Motobravo Paparazzi scooter……and to my surprise it really does look good.  It’s the 150cc model so it can actually break 50 mph meaning you’re less likely to get smashed, and it really does get about 90 mpg.  I rode on the thing and it was pretty fun.  The only downside is that for some states, if it’s above 50cc it’s considered a motorcycle, so you’d have to have a license and insurance, which can’t be too expensive on this thing.  In the link above, you can get it shipped for $1200, which seems to be a really good price.  This is also the same thing and for the same price, just without the Paparazzi badging…which would be less ghey.

If you’ve got to stick with the 50cc because you don’t want to get the motorcycle license and get insurance, their smaller one isn’t bad either.  Seriously though, how likely are you to get pulled over on a scooter and have a cop check to see if it’s 50 or 150 cc?  Looks very similar and is shipped for $1000.  It is smaller though, and although you’ll find stuff saying they’ll break 50 mph I’d be less than optimistic about that based on my ride on the 150 cc on flat ground, but maybe there’s a break in period.

Whatever you do, if you end up with a 2 wheeler, just don’t be like this chick.
